Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR System)
Our ventilation partners – we’ve teamed up with independent local specialists who offer a wide range of units and services from MVHR, to the ground and air source heat pumps to suit all specifications and budgets.

An Ecologic SIP build system provides a vast improvement in airtightness when compared with more traditional construction methods, therefore careful attention needs to be considered to the ventilation method requirements to create and maintain a healthy living environment and indoor air quality. MVHR systems, in combination with the excellent insulating properties of a SIP structure, greatly improve the energy efficiency and ultimately reduce your carbon footprint (in excess of 90% improved efficiency considering heat loss).
MVHR facts:
-
The average family of four produces up to 18 liters of water vapor every day through normal activities such as bathing, cooking, and even breathing
-
Healthy buildings usually require a full change of air every two hours, when meeting an air permeability level of less than 5m³/m²hr
-
Indoor air can be up to ten times more polluted than outside air
-
They are designed to quietly operate 24×7 continuously circulating fresh filtered air through the structure
-
Tackles unwanted moisture, pollutants, and viruses as well as strong smells from pets and cooking as well as noises from outside
-
Property size will dictate unit power consumption which can average around 30 – 120 Watts on normal running speed and up to around 200 watts on full boost for larger units
-
Typical running costs of a modern single unit range from £40 to £60 per annum, meaning you’ll save on heat energy more than it costs to run
How do they work?
In a typical application, moist, stale air is extracted from wet rooms (kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms). The air passes through a high-efficiency heat exchanger which utilises the heat from the stale air and transfers it and uplifts the temperature to the incoming fresh air. This pre-warmed drier fresh air is delivered to all other habitable rooms.
Most heat exchanger systems will recover up to 90 – 95% from the heat of the outgoing air, saving energy and money on heating costs. A typical house temperature of 20°C will uplift from incoming temperatures of below zero to give around 18.5°C to habitable rooms. However, summer bypasses ensure a small tempering of the air through the same heat exchanger.
